San Leandro, Calif. (Sept.
25, 2001) -- The National Bike Registry (NBR), an Internet-based national
registration system that returns lost and stolen bicycles to their rightful
owners, and McGruff ® the Crime Dog have teamed up with bike and scooter
manufacturers Giant, Raleigh, Diamond Back, and RazorÔ to “help take a
bite out of crime”®.
All new bicycles and scooters sold by these manufacturers will come with
National Bike Registry label included with their purchase. All customers have
to do is fill out the form and mail it in or go on line to activate their
registration. They receive a free six-month registration with their purchase.
Customers also have the option to extend their coverage for ten years for only
ten dollars ($1 per year).
“We are committed to making our registration service more readily
available to consumers,” said Rob Kaplan, NBR spokesperson. “By
reducing theft, and fear of theft, we’ll sell more, and better, bicycles.
That’s good for our industry.”
Retailers, manufacturers, and law enforcement are bringing the NBR
service to a wider audience, allowing more bikes to be registered and protected
against theft. With NBR, police have a
way to identify owners, solve crime, and return stolen property.
“NBR services are an added value
for our customers,” said Russ Okawa, Director of
Marketing for Giant Bicycles. “We can
help to protect our customers’ purchase and reduce their fear of theft.”
In the United States, thousands
of bicycles disappear each day; most of these bikes are stolen from places that
the owners think are safe. By teaming up with McGruff, a nationally recognized symbol of crime prevention, the National Bike
Registry is helping to build safer communities and reduce crime through
comprehensive crime prevention strategies.
