Thousands of Police Departments Team up with National Bike Registry to Return Stolen Bicycles

San Leandro, Calif. (Sept. 25, 2001) -- The National Bike Registry (NBR), a national registration system that returns lost and stolen bicycles to their rightful owners, is teaming up with thousands of Police Departments across the United States to help cut crime.  NBR registers bikes in the only national database dedicated to returning recovered stolen bikes to the rightful owner.

“Police departments in major metropolitan areas use NBR as their official bicycle registration system,” said Rob Kaplan, NBR spokesperson. “As the official bike registry of the National Crime Prevention Council, we expect all law enforcement agencies to use our system.”

In the past six months, NBR sent access and informational materials to more that 17,000 law enforcement agencies.  More than 1,500 are already actively using the service to return stolen property.  Some of the participating law enforcement agencies include: New York City Police, San Francisco Police, Boston Police and Austin Police departments.

“Systems like the National Bike Registry offer a distinct advantage,” according to Mike Tye, Police Chief of the Hercules, California Police Department, and member of the California Law Enforcement Tracking System (CLETS) Technology Committee. “NBR is a great use of modern technology, and will benefit communities across the country.”

Studies show that bikes registered in the National Bike Registry are ten times less likely to get stolen, and are nine times more likely to be returned than the national average.  Any one who wants to protect their bike can register at one of the participating departments, local bike shops or online at www.nationalbikeregistry.com.
